What is the cheapest electricity company in Spain? How to find the cheapest one for you

Updated on 03/11/2026 · Eloy Santos · Voltaris, independent energy advisers in Spain

Short answer: no electricity company in Spain is the cheapest for everyone. The cheapest one for you is the tariff with the lowest total cost for your contracted power, your usage and your hours, including fixed charges, add-ons and any lock-in. Comparing only the advertised price per kWh is misleading surprisingly often.

Why there is no single answer

Every tariff splits its price differently between power (a fixed daily charge) and energy (what you use). A very cheap kWh can come with expensive power, and vice versa:

The number to look at: your total cost

To compare properly, work out what each tariff would cost with your real usage: power (kW × price per kW per day × days), energy (kWh in each band × its price), any monthly fees, and taxes (5.11% electricity tax, meter rental and 21% VAT on the mainland and the Balearics; IGIC in the Canary Islands).

A useful shortcut: divide your bill's total before taxes by the kWh used. That is your real average price per kWh, and it is the figure to compare, not the advertised one.

The usual traps

Switching is free and there is no power cut

Changing supplier in Spain is purely administrative: same installation, same meter, no interruption. You need the account holder's ID (NIE or passport), the CUPS code from your bill and a Spanish IBAN.

Find yours without spending an afternoon on it

Voltaris does that comparison for you, free and in English: send a photo of your bill and we calculate the total cost of the available tariffs with your real usage, tell you which is cheapest for you and how much you would save per year, with lock-ins and small print spelled out. If switching makes sense we handle it; if your current tariff is already good, we tell you.
