Estimated electricity bill in Spain: what it means, why a big catch-up bill arrives and how to avoid it
Short answer: an estimated bill charges a calculated consumption, not one read from your meter. When a real reading arrives the difference is settled, and if consumption was underestimated for months you get a large catch-up bill (regularización) all at once. It is not an extra charge, it is usage that had not been billed yet. You avoid it by checking the reading and submitting your own when a bill is estimated.
What "lectura estimada" means
Every bill is based on two meter readings, at the start and end of the period. If the network operator (distribuidora, not your supplier) cannot get a real reading, the supplier bills an estimate based on your past usage. The bill says «estimada» next to the reading, or «real» if it was read.
Almost all meters in Spain are now digital and read remotely, but remote reading sometimes fails because of communication problems with the meter or the line.
Why a catch-up bill follows
When a real reading finally arrives, the supplier compares what it billed with what you actually used. If the estimate was too low, you are charged the difference at once; if it was too high, the excess is refunded or credited. Holiday homes are the classic case: low use in winter, high in summer, and an estimate that follows neither.
How to check the catch-up bill
- Take a dated photo of your meter.
- Compare it with the "current reading" on the bill. If your meter shows less than what was billed, there is an error.
- Add up the kWh on the estimated bills and the catch-up bill: they must match the difference between the last real reading and the current one.
How to stop it happening again
- Submit your own reading (autolectura) to the network operator or your supplier whenever a bill is estimated.
- Check your usage in the network operator's customer area: digital meters show it day by day.
- If your meter has not been read for months, tell the network operator: it may have a communication fault.

Frequently asked questions
What does «lectura estimada» mean on a Spanish electricity bill?
That the consumption billed was not read from your meter but calculated from your past usage. A real reading says «real».
Why did I get a huge regularización on my Spanish electricity bill?
Because for several months the bills used estimated readings lower than your real consumption; when the real reading arrived, the difference was charged at once.
Can I submit my own meter reading in Spain?
Yes. You can give your reading (autolectura) to the network operator or your supplier, which is worth doing whenever a bill is estimated.
